How to create a cooler home this summer

Summer is fast approaching, and it’ll soon be time to battle the heat and try to cool down our homes.

I don’t know about you, but our children really struggle to settle down at night during the hot weather. This is particularly true for our daughter. She’s been lumbered with the box room where the sun comes in from late afternoon all through the evening. It is like a little oven in there!

Since we’ve lived in this house, we’ve come up with a few tricks to help to keep the house cool during the hot weather.

Shut the curtains

Although it goes against everything I believe in to shut the sun out, this really does make a difference. For us, the sun comes in through the front of the house from late afternoon through into the evenings. So, I will shut all of the front curtains from mid-afternoon. This helps to keep the rooms cooler.

Use fans

Electric fans really help to cool the rooms down in the hot weather. In the summer, I have a fan going in our bedroom all night, it’s the only way I can get any sleep.

One issue we had with our daughter was that she has a high sleeper bed. This meant that even when we did put a fan into her bedroom, the cool breeze wouldn’t reach her. We have just bought an electric fan that will clip onto her bed which I hope will make a big difference this summer. I won’t leave it going all night, but it should help her nod off to sleep a little easier.

Avoid using the oven

Opt for cold meals so that you don’t need to use the oven. Or, you could take advantage of the warm weather and cook outside on the barbecue!

I hope these tips will help you to keep cooler this summer!
